Nervous

I don't know why, but I'm really nervous to get my hair cut. I know Nancy will do a great job, that's not the problem. I think it may be because Matt is skeptical. He knows how much I hated short hair after boot camp. What he doesn't realize is that it was such a horrible haircut that I got in Boot Camp that I couldn't wait to grow it out. And it took so long to grow out. But I gotta get ready. I think Maura's going to get her hair cut too, so I have to pick her up. I'll update you guys later today.

Guilty

Right now I feel really guilty. I have only ridden (is that the right word?) my bike 11.5 miles this week. I rode on Tuesday, but I can't ride on Monday or Wednesday, because I don't have enough time. And Thursday rolled around, and I felt really ill this morning and actually missed my first class (not missing much, trust me). But I was able to go to my afternoon class. I still don't feel 100%, but I'm a little better. I had to drive the truck, again, though. That's why I feel so guilty. I've been driving that thing more this week than I have in several weeks. And it's such a gas hog that I can't stand it. I love my truck, don't get me wrong, but I feel guilty driving it so much. *sigh* What can I do? I can't help being sick, I suppose. I guess Kate's kids have been sick for a while, but I haven't even SEEN them since the 4th, so I don't think we have the same thing. I'm just hoping I can keep it together tonight. I have a 3 page paper to write (haven't started. Such a procrastinator!) and a test to study for.

Oh, guess what! Guess what! I'm doing something crazy tomorrow! I'm cutting my hair! Short! It is ridiculously long, and I have wanted to cut it all summer. Matt finally gave me the go-ahead. So Nancy, Kate's friend (She did my hair for my wedding, and she did a spectacular job), is going to cut it. I'm going to donate it to Locks of Love. Or that is the plan, anyways. I'll be sure to post pictures. I'm nervous, but extremely excited, as well.

Ok, off to homework. Matt's cooking dinner, which is a rare treat for me. So I can focus on my schoolwork. I'm glad we finally heard from Mom. I was getting worried. :)

Has Anyone?

Has anyone heard from Mom lately? It seems like it has been a long time since she's sent out an email. Maybe I'm just not getting them.

So, yesterday I rode my bike to school, and I was getting ready to ride home. The clouds looked pretty ominous, but the wind was going to be at my back, and I thought I could maybe make it home before it got too bad. But Matt called and said he was picking me up. He was a little worried about the storm. I still think I could have made it, but I'm glad he came anyways. I was still sore from the 35 miler that we rode on Sunday. It gave me almost an extra hour at home yesterday. Which is always nice. Did I take advantage of the extra time and get house work done? Homework? Nope. I played games on Facebook. I keep playing Scramble, Word Twist, and Path Words. But my new found guilty pleasure is Sudoku. Matt and I were playing against each other. I beat him by 3 points.

Ok, well, let me go get ready for school. I'm driving today, which I hate, but I'll get over it. I just don't have enough time to ride. And today is supposed to be one of the hottest days in the year. *sigh* I suppose I'll stay in the A/C. I need to make a lunch.

Tornados and Hurricanes

Check out this picture that my Aunt Stormy sent. This is taken from my cousin Stephanie's house in Slidell, LA. That is the Lake Ponchartrain bridge. It's pretty crazy, isn't it? Its a good picture.

Here's the email she sent, explaining the photo:

Look at this tornado!!! This picture was taken from Stefanie's back
yard. The tornado was right by the twin span of I-10 that crosses Lake
Ponchartrain from New Orleans to Slidell. As close as it looks here, it
is actually about 1and 1/2 miles closer to my apartment. Right after
this picture was taken another tornado formed right next to this one.
We raced to pick up all the lawn furniture and potted plants. Mike and
Chris went down to the bottom of the yard to tie up Mike's jet ski and
make it more secure. They just had a little dock built on the water so
that we could fish and dock the jet skis and Randy's boat down there.

Fortunately, the two tornadoes evaporated before hitting that
bridge....and there were cars being driven on the interstate when that
tornado was there.

Just another exciting day out here in little ole Slidell. By the way,
Phil (my brother) caughter a 48 lb drum fish on the dock on July
4th...that was exciting too!!!!

Love, Stormy

Ok, so I hope everyone else is enjoying better weather where ever you are. As for myself, with the news of a "hurricane bertha" in the Atlantic, I really ought to get my hurricane preparedness kit in order. Hmm...maybe I'll get right to that. :)

35

Total miles for last week:

Monday-0
Tuesday-22.5
Wednesday-0
Thursday-24.5
Friday-0
Saturday-7.5
Sunday-35.5!

Total-90 miles

Today, Matt and I decided to go on a REAL bike ride. We thought it would be ironic to ride our bikes to First Landing State Park (ironic because we just bought a parking annual pass for the park, and now we're riding our bikes there...)So we took off at 9 am, and rode, and rode, and before we knew it, we were at the park. Our goal was to ride 30 miles, which is 8 more miles than I usually do in a day. So we took the Cape Henry Trail, which is partially dirt (mud) and when we got to the other side, we decided to see where along the ocean front we were. We came out at 64th street! We couldn't resist riding to the boardwalk and riding the whole length. This added a few extra miles, about 2.5 each way, and our total ride ended up a little over 35 miles. We're both pretty exhausted. We had to take a nap this afternoon. But we got home around 1, so it only took us 4 hours. But we did stop several times to stretch, and just enjoy the fact that we RODE OUR BIKES down to the oceanfront. Unfortunately, we didn't end up saving much money, b/c we decided to get Subway on the way back so we could save ourselves some time cooking lunch. But still...it was a great ride overall. And the weather cooperated. It was overcast and gloomy, but we didn't get rained on. I think we're well on our way to being ready for the great ride across the country.

OK

So, for those of you who have not looked at Kate's blog yet...DON'T READ ON! Go to her blog. Then come back here :) Everyone else, read on...

So, Kate's going to have a little girl. I'm so happy for her. I guess now that she's officially out of the closet about her pregnancy (it's about time) we can all talk about it. I'm kinda excited for this one. I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like yesterday she was telling me that she was pregnant. (I know for some of you it WAS yesterday ;) And now the baby's going to be here soon. Almost too soon. We're going to have a lot to do before the time comes. (Honestly, THEY are going to have a lot to do before the time comes, but I'll be right down the road if they need anything.) I can't believe she's kept it a secret this long. There are people at her church that don't even know that she's pregnant. Come on, people. She's not fat! What, do they think she's overeating because she is stressed out? Seriously?

Anyways, this blog is not supposed to be about Kate. It is supposed to be about me. I honestly almost cried when I watched the video on her blog. Almost. It is kind of exciting.

OK, so to switch gears, Matt ordered me some pepper spray for my bike yesterday. Evidently you can't get the (good) stuff in stores. And he was doing some research, and found out what the really good stuff is. Pepper spray potency is measured in SHUs, or Scoville Heat Units. This is a measurement of how "hot" the peppers are. To give you a good idea, green peppers rate 0 on the SHU scale, and habanero chilies rate 350,000 SHUs. The pepper spray Matt bought for me is rated at something like 5.3 million SHUs. There are some videos on YouTube that show stupid guys (why is it always guys who do these stupid things?) getting sprayed with the stuff. Usually there is some sort of bucket or hose that they start to stick their head in or under, and after about an hour and a half, the burning subsides. I think I'm going to feel very safe with this stuff. Look out, all you would-be crooks! You can't take my bike, not without a considerable amount of pain, that is.

Well, I got up early today....yeah, so that I could finish up the first book of the Twilight series. I was skeptical, but I must admit that it is a pretty good book. Not the best book ever, but really good. It kept me wanting to know more, and it was suspenseful. I liked it, especially since it took me about 24 hours to read it. Total. I like quick reads like that. Then I did some yoga, and now I'm going to get ready to ride my bike to school. I have to take some books over to Kate's; Maura is liking the Ender's Game series, so I'm going to bring over Ender's Shadow, Shadow Puppets, and Shadow of the Hegemon. I don't have Shadow of the Giant, yet. That's the last in the series, and I can't believe I haven't read it yet. Ok, I need to take a shower, even though I'm going to get ridiculously sweaty on my ride to school. But it is WORTH IT! $6 a day adds up!

Ok, hope everyone is having a most excellent 4th of July Eve.

Love you all!

Another Tuesday

Ok, so why is it that every time I look at Marie's blog, I get that "It's My Life," by Bon Jovi song in my head. It's now or never. And I ain't gonna live forever....

Anyways, that is beside the point. So, I rode my bike to school today. It was the second day of classes for the second half of the semester. My two new classes are Math 335- Discrete Math, and Hist 346- Virginia History. The math class is so ridiculously easy right now I'm kicking myself for not considering CLEP-ping out of it. Oh, well, too late for that. I'll just try to stay awake. But the VA History class...well, the prof is awesome. He's this old guy who you just know knows a lot. I know I'm going to learn a lot from his class. There's a bunch of kids in the class who fall asleep in class and are already complaining about the course-load. Wimps. I'm not afraid of a couple papers. This session is going to go by really quickly. I think it's only 6 or 7 weeks long. :) I just found out (actually it was written on the syllabus, so I don't know why I didn't see it) but my biology class ends in 2 more weeks. Yeah!!! I thought it went into August, for some reason. So that means no more Monday/Wednesday night lab classes. I actually despise night classes. They are the worst. Especially in downtown Norfolk, when I have to walk back to my car late at night past all the creepy people standing around asking for cigarettes. I always try to go in a group, and if I can't, to keep at least a sidewalk's distance between me and anyone else. You can never be too careful. Along those same lines, I am thinking of getting a can of mace for my bike. Today, as I was riding home, a kid yelled at me "Hey! Let me have your bike!" As if I would just give it to him right there, or something. I don't get some people. But, just in case...I haven't been too concerned about the neighborhoods I ride through before this, because the troublemakers usually don't get up before noon. But now that my class ends at 320, all the hoodlums are up and ready to make trouble. I keep my eyes open.

Well, I think Matt already went to bed, so I think that is my cue. I need to get a good night's rest; with all the smoke in the air my allergies are running haywire and driving me crazy.

I'll talk to you guys more later.

Pam

PS. Does everyone know that Penny got a dog????? I'm so jealous. It is even an English Springer Spaniel. How unfair! (I'm actually really happy for her.)
